IPL 2016: We have to fit in different roles, says Virender Sehwag

For the past few weeks, cricket aficionados have seen Virender Sehwag in a new role as a commentator during the World T20 Championship. And on Wednesday, Sehwag, who was appointed as the mentor for the Kings XI Punjab, did not miss a chance to tell about the different roles he plays in cricket and real life.
Ahead of the Kings XI Punjab’s opening match in the IPL’s ninth edition against Gujarat Lions on April 11, KXIP coach Sanjay Bangar and captain David Miller hope that Sehwag can guide the youngsters in the team this year.

“We enjoy different roles at different times. Sometimes, we are son, sometimes father and sometimes grandfather. Cricket is also like that. We have to fit in different roles. As a player, as a captain or as a mentor, it is the same. I am enjoying at the moment. I will contribute in whichever way I can and help the youngsters and motivate them. I will share my experience and what kind of mindset I have. I will miss playing cricket, but I will enjoy in other leagues as MCL,” said Sehwag.

Marlon Samuels just a normal kid, really

Former Australian player, on morning after the T20 final Marlon Samuels is walking in the hotel foyer in Kolkata. It’s the morning after the night of his life. He is sporting a chiselled body, tattooed arms, and the big smile of victory. It’s a few hours after Lawson’s incredible character assassination of the man on a breakfast show in Australia. There seems to be two prevalent views floating about Samuels. His harshest critics say he acted like a lout, giving the lip to Ben Stokes, taking a shot at Shane Warne, stripping his shirt, and taking pot-shots at his naysayers with his feet up on the table at the post-final media interaction. A few, like Lawson, have gone beyond the pale. Some others have succumbed to classifying him under the stereotyped Caribbean swagger, calling him a ‘badass’, which is intended as a sort of compliment. There is also a third view out there, from the people who know him well. That Marlon Samuels is a moody, emotional boy-man, living his life through the debris of slights, hurts, backbiting, and finding solace in himself, cocooned in his small trust circle, and spending most of his time with his kids, and his dogs.

ICC Women’s World T20: England women’s sqaud spurred on by history, propped up by form

ENGLAND CAPTAIN Charlotte Edwards played a match-winning knock of 77 against Pakistan in their final league encounter in Chennai to steer her side through to the semifinals of the World T20. In doing so, she became the first player to go past 2,500 runs in the shortest format. That’s a mind boggling stat, considering women don’t play as frequently as their male counterparts. However, Edwards is a bit of a doyen in England women’s cricket. Since her international debut in July 1996, the 36-year-old has gone on to feature in 23 Tests, 191 ODIs and 94 T20s. In the interim, she would play key roles in her side winning two premier ICC events — the 50-over World Cup and the World T20 triumphs — both of which came seven years ago.
For a player with such wealth of experience, Edwards found herself at the receiving end of the selectors’ wrath after England’s embarrassing loss to Australia in last summer’s Ashes. Questions were raised about her commitment to the team, and to women’s cricket in England. Sections in the British press questioned her viability in the team and sought her immediate sacking.

India vs West Indies: All our bowlers will target Chris Gayle, says Ravi Shastri

India’s team director Ravi Shastri on Wednesday called on the side’s under-performing batsmen to raise their game in the ICC World Twenty20 semifinal against West Indies in Mumbai, saying the hosts can’t rely on one or two individuals at this stage of the tournament.

Shastri hoped that batsmen such as Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina, after an indifferent run, step up and show their mettle at the Wankhede Stadium inThursday.
“I still believe we have played only 70 per cent to our abilities in this tournament. There are still areas where we can improve. Let’s hope it happens tomorrow (Thursday),” Shastri said at the match-eve media conference.

India vs West Indies: Yuvraj Singh ruled out of ICC World Twenty20, Manish Pandey comes in as replacement

Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the ICC World T20 ahead of the semis between India and West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. Manish Pandey, who was named as standby for the injured southpaw, replaces him in India’s 15-member squad.

In Steve Smith, Shane Watson and James Faulkner dominated match at Mohali, Pakistan fell short and crashed out of the tournament – once again in the group stages.
The result means the three-way battle for passage into the semifinals has now been reduced to two two teams. As things stand, New Zealand are top with three wins in three matches and six points. The Kiwis are already assured of a place in the next round irrespective of how they fare against Bangladesh.

Virat Kohli was the difference between two teams, says Shoaib Malik

Completely foxed by the turning Eden Gardens wicket, senior Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik said their batting unit needs to take cue from Virat Kohli as the Indian vice-captain’s classy knock on a difficult pitch turned out to be the difference between the two teams.
Kohli was head and shoulders above the rest in terms of quality of batsmanship as he played a special knock of unbeaten 55 runs off just 37 balls on a difficult pitch to guide India to a convincing six-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in a rain-curtailed ICC World Twenty20 match on Saturday night.
“Our total was not enough to defend against such a great batting line-up. We should give credit to Virat Kohli’s innings. He was the only difference between the two teams,” Malik said at the post-match press conference late on Saturday night.
“He (Kohli) backs his skills and that’s his key. He reads the situation well. He knows how to play on any difficult or flat track. That’s why he’s very consistent. You’re the best coach of yourself. If you talk to yourself you will have all the answers. As a batting unit we also need to do the same thing,” he said.

“The conditions are not in our hands but yes one area we have to improve on is our batting. We have to work a lot. When the ball was turning a lot we should have played sweep or reverse sweeps more often. Those shots are helpful on a big turning wicket as it breaks the spinners line.
“There are areas we need to improve, especially our batting. Even though it was a tough pitch to bat on, I feel we could have set a better target,” Malik added.
In a low scoring rain-curtailed showdown, India first restricted Pakistan to 118 for five and then overhauled the target in 15.5 overs on a viciously turning track.
With a moisture-laden pitch on offer following rains, Pakistan went by their strength and included four seamers in the playing eleven, leaving out left-arm spinner Imad Wasim.
But the plan backfired as to the suprise of all and sundry the wicket was turning viciously from the first over.
Malik later admitted that the Pakistan team management completely misread the wicket.
“We were not really expecting this kind of pitch. We expected it to behave the way it did against Bangladesh. Compared it to the last wicket and it didn’t see any different. In fact, it seemed a better wicket than that. We did not expect so much of spin on this wicket,” Malik said.
“Even (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni said the same thing. These are things beyond our control. Obviously weather is not in your control. We also lost the toss but it’s part of the game.”
This was India’s 11th consecutive win over Pakistan in the ICC World tournaments with Kohli scoring third successive half-century against them in last three world editions of shortest format.
Asked about the jinx, Malik said: “We have lost to other teams in World Cups but it becomes big when it comes to India. Credit should be given to the Indian team and the way they played on a difficult pitch.”
Malik also backed his skipper Shahid Afridi’s decision to promote himself at No.3 position in place of Mohammad Hafeez.
“Everyone is flexible in T20 format. Our opening pair took a lot of overs and Afridi was in form, we should not ignore that. It’s captain who always leads from the front and he felt he could score freely on a wicket which was difficult and he took that decision,” he said of Afridi, who scored just eight from 14 balls on Saturday.
